How long do sump pumps last?
Seven to ten years for most units. Pumps that run often in a high water table wear sooner, which is why age alone is worth acting on before a storm proves the point.
Do I really need a battery backup?
If losing the basement would matter, yes. Storms are exactly when the power goes out and exactly when the pump is needed most. A backup is the difference between a working pump and an ornament during an outage.
Why does my sump pump run constantly?
Either there is genuinely that much water, or the float switch is stuck, the basin is undersized, or the check valve is letting discharged water run back in. Constant running burns out a pump quickly, so it is worth diagnosing.
Can you install a sump pump where there is not one?
Yes. That means cutting a basin into the floor, routing a discharge line away from the foundation, and providing a safe electrical connection. We assess drainage and water table first to place it where it will actually do the work.
Where should the discharge line go?
Far enough from the foundation that the water does not simply find its way back to the basin, and never into a sanitary sewer. Getting this wrong is why some pumps seem to run forever.
Submersible or pedestal, which is better?
