Gas Line Installation and Repair in Tacoma, WA
New gas lines for fireplaces, fire pits, ranges, water heaters and standby generators, plus leak repair on old pipe, sized to the load, permitted and pressure-tested across Tacoma and Pierce County.
Gas Line Plumbing From the Meter to Every Appliance
A gas line is the pipe that carries natural gas from the meter, or propane from the tank, to each appliance in and around the house. We run new lines and branches, extend a line to a new range, fireplace, water heater, fire pit or generator, move lines during a remodel, and repair leaks and corroded fittings on old pipe. Every new line is sized for the appliances it will feed, permitted for your address and pressure-tested before the gas goes on.
This fall, as part of a backyard and deck remodel in Wollochet, outside Gig Harbor, Devin ran new gas lines to a fireplace inside the house and a fire pit on the upper balcony. Devin sketched the whole system on paper, a trunk line to the first tee with a branch to each appliance, and sized every section from its appliance load and the length of its run. Once both main runs were in, the whole system held its test pressure for an hour with no loss before the crew left for the day.
In Tacoma’s West End in September, the propane supply to a standby generator was leaking at old, rusted fittings beside the generator. Devin rebuilt the supply with new pipe and fittings and then put the line on a gauge to confirm that it held. Outdoor gas fittings sit in the rain all year, and we test every repaired line on a gauge before it goes back in service.

Signs You Need a Gas Line Plumber
Gas line work usually starts with a new appliance, a remodel or a fitting that has seen better days.
You Smell Gas
Leave the house before you call anyone, then call PSE’s 24-hour line or 911 from outside. Our gas line FAQ lists the steps, and once the utility has made it safe, we repair the leak on your side of the meter.
A New Appliance With No Gas Outlet
A new range, fireplace, water heater or grill needs a gas outlet where it will sit, with a shutoff at the appliance and a pipe sized for its load.
A Remodel That Moves Things
Moving a range across the kitchen or adding a fireplace means moving or extending gas pipe, and that is easiest while the walls and floors are open.
Outdoor Living Plans
Fire pits, outdoor kitchens and pool heaters all need a line run outside and often underground, as on the Wollochet deck this fall.
A Standby Generator
A natural gas or propane generator needs a supply sized for its full load, and an older one may need its fittings rebuilt, as in the West End.
Rust or Corrosion on Old Pipe
Rusted fittings, corroded buried pipe and old appliance connectors deserve a closer look. PSE asks homeowners to inspect buried metal piping for corrosion and to repair leaks right away.
What We Install and Repair
From a single appliance connection to a whole new system.
New Lines and Branches
We plan the route, size the pipe from the total appliance load and the length to each appliance, and install it with a shutoff at every appliance.
Appliance Connections
Ranges, water heaters, fireplaces and grills are connected with the right connector and shutoff, then lit and checked at every joint.
Outdoor and Buried Lines
Lines to fire pits, outdoor kitchens, pool heaters and outbuildings are run in pipe suited to burial or outdoor exposure, located before anyone digs and tested before the trench is closed.
Leak Repair
We find the leak, replace the failed fittings or pipe, and test the line before it goes back in service.
Gas Supply for a Tankless Water Heater
A tankless water heater can draw several times the gas of a tank, so a conversion can mean a larger gas line. Our Tacoma water heater page walks through a Hilltop example.
Gas Line Rules Around Pierce County
Who owns the pipe, who permits it and who marks it before a shovel goes in.
Past the Meter, the Pipe Is Yours
PSE owns the pipe up to the meter, and the homeowner owns and maintains everything past it, including buried lines to outbuildings, pools, hot tubs and generators. PSE warns that buried piping that is not maintained can leak or corrode, and when that pipe is metal and underground, we inspect it, repair it or replace it.
Permits in Tacoma and Pierce County
New or extended gas piping is not on Tacoma’s list of permit-exempt work, so it is permitted and inspected in Tacoma. In unincorporated Pierce County, adding or changing gas pipe takes a county gas-piping permit, and the new piping must pass an air test with the inspector watching. Gig Harbor’s peninsula, including Wollochet, is unincorporated Pierce County outside the city limits; see Gig Harbor.
Call 811 Before Anyone Digs
Before a trench goes in for a new line, the existing utilities are marked through 811: PSE marks its own pipe up to the meter, and a private locator marks the customer’s lines past it. Our gas FAQ covers the details for homeowners planning to dig on their own.
Our Gas Line Process
Every line starts with the appliances it has to feed.
List the Appliances
Tell us what the line will feed, now and in the future, and where each appliance will sit.
Size the Pipe
We add up the loads and measure each run, the way Devin sketched the Wollochet system load by load and run by run.
Price It and Pull the Permit
You approve the price, and we file the permit with the City of Tacoma, Pierce County or your city.
Install and Pressure-Test
The new pipe goes in and holds a pressure test before it is covered, with an inspection wherever the permit calls for one.
Connect and Light
We connect each appliance with its shutoff, light it and check every joint before we go.

Gas Line Questions
Sizing, testing, permits and propane.
We add up the rated input of every appliance the line will feed and measure each run, because the pipe has to deliver the full load at the far end. In Wollochet this fall, Devin sketched the trunk line to the first tee and the branches to the fireplace and fire pit, with each load and length.
Yes. A buried line is run in pipe suited to burial, located before anyone digs and tested before the trench is closed. Once it is in, it is part of your piping past the meter, which PSE says the homeowner maintains, so buried metal pipe should be checked for corrosion over the years.
